What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men that can occur at any age. The condition can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity, obesity, or the use of certain drugs. Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impair your self confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition.
Gynecomastia is characterized by excess localized fat, excess glandular tissue development, excess breast skin, and can be present in one or both breasts.
There are two ways to reduce gynecomastia one is weight loss, but it does not eliminate it entirely for most patients. Surgery is the only other known physical remedy to alleviate this condition. The surgery takes up to 2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia.
Although rare, surgical procedures can encounter complications. Possible complications include temporary loss of breast sensation, temporary pain, swelling and soreness.
Most patients can return to work within two weeks. Patients typically wait one month before beginning light exercise. The scars will take from a few months to a year or possibly longer to fade.
