The Skinny on Tummy Tucks

Tummy tuck surgery

Wish you had a hot bikini body? Want a flat stomach without thousands of crunches? A tummy tuck could be the answer to your bikini wearing woes. Flat and toned abs are what many of us strive for, but sometimes exercise and diet just isn’t enough. This can affect your self-confidence, and is often very distressing, but there is another solution. Tummy tuck surgery, or abdominoplasty, is a procedure which flattens the abdomen by removing excess fat and overhanging skin and tightening the muscles in the abdominal wall. The result is a tight, smooth stomach that looks sensational in clothing or swimwear. Undergoing this surgery can certainly help you to get your figure back in shape and restore your self-esteem.

Depending upon your needs, you may require a full or a mini tummy tuck but both are done under general anesthesia. With full abdominoplasty, the surgeon makes incisions around your navel and near your bikini line. Your belly button is cut from the surrounding skin. Muscles that are stretched are pulled together and stitched into place, and excess fat and skin is removed. Your belly button will then be repositioned to align with the new shape of your stomach. The incisions are closed with stitches, and your lower abdomen is firmly supported and wrapped in bandages, and compression garments must be worn. You will likely have a scar around your belly button and a long curved scar under your bikini line. As the name implies, a mini tuck is just that with only the skin and fat below the belly button being removed also leaving a long curved scar under your bikini line.

After the Surgery:
Your abdomen may feel very sore or tender, but the pain you might feel can be controlled with medication. You will need several days of bed rest, but many patients return to work in a few weeks. However, you will not be able to exercise for about 4 to 6 weeks and complete recovery, especially from a full tuck, could take three months or more. Only after that period will you be able to see the final results.

Aside from the bandages that cover the incision, it is required that you wear a compression garment to reduce swelling and provide support to the skin as it tightens. You must continue to wear this garment for several weeks.

Healing time depends on the overall health of the patient. If you are a smoker, you will be required to stop at least one month prior to surgery. Smoking prohibits the body’s natural ability to restore itself and can cause the incisions to break down and not to heal.
